Circuit and Tours

Religious Circuit:

Cathedral

Included are some of the most important churches in Cusco such as:

  • La catedral del Cusco
  • Iglesia del Triunfo
  • Templo de la Compañía de Jesus
  • Iglesia de San Blas
  • Iglesia de la Merced
  • Templo de Santo Domingo, Etc.

In these places you can view many paintings from the Cusqueña School of art and also colonial architecture.

Places to visit in the city:

Koricancha:

Koricancha

The writers of the chronicles said that this building was one of the most important in Cusco because the interior and exterior walls were covered with gold sheets. This was because this was the main temple of the sun.

With the arrival of the conquistadors they constructed on top of this temple a church and the Dominican convent. During the earthquake in 1650, the church and the Dominican Convent collapsed and they were reconstructed around 1681. The convent actually has a gallery of paintings from the 17th and 18th Century.

This site can be visited from Monday to Saturday, from 08:30 - 18:30 and Sundays from 14:00 - 17:00


Sacsayhuaman:

Sacsayhuaman

This archeological site could be one of the most important and dedicated to the religious Andean cosmology, the adoration of the Inti (sun), Quilla (moon), Chaska (stars), Illapa (rays) and all of the Gods.

This site is known for its enormous stones, some of them which have a weight of between 90 and 128 tonnes.

Every 24th June, Cusco celebrates the festival of the sun; Intiraymi.

This site is situated 2km from Cusco (10 minutes by car). It can be visited from Monday to Sunday including holidays from 07:00 - 18:00.

With a stretch of 8 km to the northwest, you can also find other archeological sites such as Qenqo, Pukapukara and Tambomachay.

Museum

In the city of Cusco we can also visit very important museums which keep Inca treasures such as:

  • Museo Inka
  • Museo Garcilaso
  • Museo de sitio de Koricancha

Or painting museums like:

  • Museo de arte precolombino
  • Museo de Santa Catalina
  • Palacio Arzobispal

Sacred Valley Circuit:

Lamas

The circuit of the sacred valley starts in the Tematico Park of South Americans camelidos "Awanakancha". They are in charge of looking after the camelidos such as llamas, vicuñas and alpacas in their natural environment. They also extract and weave their woolen fibers into products for sale.

The next stop is the Taray lookout to observe the sacred valley.

Following is the archeological site of Pisaq and the Pisaq market 32km from Cusco.

The next stop is in Urubamba for lunch at a typical local restaurant.

Following is the archeological site of Ollantaytambo(93 Km. from Cusco) and to finish is the archeological site of Chinchero, where you can also observe and buy traditional weaving from the local area.

Inca Trail to Machupicchu:

Inca Trail

It is one of the most important routes in South America. On the trail you can observe flora, fauna, cliffs and streams.

The most popular route starts from Km. 82 along the railway track.

Between the 12 archeological sites you can see on the way the most important are:

  • Qoriwayrachina
  • Patallaqta
  • Runkuraqay
  • Sayacmarca
  • Phuyupatamarca
  • Intipunku
  • Intipata
  • Wiñayhuayna

Machupicchu:

It was discovered in 1911 by the history professor Hiram Bingham.

The construction of this citadel could be dated from the 15th Century and was ordered by the Inca Pachacuteq to be built. Machupicchu means "Montaña vieja" Old Mountain.

Machu Pichu

This wonderful citadel is divided into two zones such as:

  • Agricultural Zone: In this zone we can only find terracing for cultivation and it is possible that there were stables for the cameloids.
  • Urban Zone: This zone is divided into two sectors:
    • The Hanan Sector.
    • In this sector you can find very important places such as:


      • The Temple of the Sun
      • Temple of the three windows
      • The sacred square
      • The Intihuatana

    • The Urin Sector
    • In this sector you can find:


      • The sacred rock
      • The three portals
      • The Acllahuasi (chosen women's house)
      • Temple of the condor

In the province Convención we can find the archeological site Choquequirao:

This archeological site is 30km from the town of Cachora. From this place you can start the four day trek.

This archeological site was possibly where the Incas took refuge since 1536. It has rooms, irrigation systems, and agriculture terraces. The buildings surround a main square.
